It's summer
... for our natural oranges too
Citrus in summer - refreshing and healthy!
When the sun blazes down from the sky, we sweat, that's quite normal. And it is precisely then that our body needs a lot of liquid with vitamins and minerals. That's where the juice of oranges or lemons comes in handy. It tastes good and invigorates.
Harvesting also takes place when it is warm.
Here on Mallorca in the valley of Sóller, ripe oranges hang on the trees well into the summer. They are harvested until August and, depending on the weather, even in September. The summer oranges, with their extremely long ripening period, are wonderfully sweet and juicy. The Valencia, the Valencia Late and the Peret are harvested. If you translate its name from Mallorcan, it is called the pear because of its oval shape. The Peret orange only grows in Mallorca, which is why it is called an "autochthonous orange variety".

Natural citrus fruits from Mallorca

Oranges like to sleep cool.
The pigments in the peel of the oranges need cool nights of about 17º to make their peel glow orange all around. These temperatures are not reached in summer on Mallorca. Night after night they sweat and therefore from July to September the oranges partly lose their strong orange colour and get a green head. The green colouring is also a sign that the fruit has not been subjected to any artificial fast-ripening treatment. The fruits are ripe and sweet despite their partly green skin, because they have been hanging on the tree and ripening in the valley of Sóller since the blossoming season in spring.
